Inquiring Mind: Abbie

First, an Inquiring Mind update: We sold Melissa our aisle runner! I love the idea of our blue patterned runner living on past our wedding to liven up someone else's! Here's another photo (low-res screen shot, sorry... real pics coming soon) of the runner in action, as my niece and flower girl decided to do a little tour during the ceremony.

Best of luck, Melissa -- I'd love a photo of the runner in action at your wedding!

Next up we have Abbie, who asks...

"Any idea who makes Trevor's mom's dress? It would be perfect for my mom!"

Abbie originally saw Ali's fun dress here. Here's another look at just how fun her dress was:

The dress is Suzy Chin for Maggy Boutique and was purchased at Nordstrom. Make it happen, Abbie's mom!

Time to re-Zazzle

I fear that my Zazzle design - intended to wear while getting pampered on the big day - didn't account for uh, boob stretchage.

Back to the drawing board, then. With the selection of a non-ribbed tank, for starters. Unless I can pretend we've had an oval logo all along?

Week in Photos

Although it hasn't been a banner blogging week for me, the week has actually been full of lots of little decisions and events. Take a look:

I haven't been wearing my engagement ring. Instead, I'm sporting a beloved family ring on my left hand while the magic ring elves make me a matching wedding band. Tick tock, tick tock...

We've selected two finalist menus for the reception, and based on some questions I need to get answered next week during my OBX planning trip, I'll be able to make a decision then. Also OBX planning trip-related: rearranged all the appointments (again).

Received my very own invitation in the mail to the lovely Kate's wedding in Austin later this month... woo hoo!

We received our first round of supplies to make the goodies for our Welcome Bags: 1 oz spray bottles for bug spray (OBX skeeters know how to attack, trust me) and 2 oz bottles for sunscreen. Send tips on economical gallon containers of both on over!

Made a decision on bridesmaid gifts, and the creative process has begun! (Enlarge for mysterious hints about what we're talking about... the gals read this blog so I can't spoil the surprise!)

We did the final proof of our invitation suite! I can't believe we're ready to go to print... aaaahhhhh!!!! I love them, and can't wait to show off all the little details in full. Also invitation-related: I started formatting our invitation list for the outer envelope and inner labels. We've eschewed "Mr. and Mrs." to honor our event's mellowness and the fact that about half of all couples attending don't have the same last name. You'll see very very soon.... :-)

Massive J.Press order arrived (pleasing the F-Word's preppiness and town of matriculation), so we now have navy linen ties for everyone, some belt ideas, and are trying out a red and white gingham pocket square in lieu of polka dots.

Here's the seersucker paired with gingham. Pretty fun, huh? Turns out a red and white polka dot pocket square in cotton or linen is nearly impossible to find, so we're trying out this look while we continue our search. Thoughts?

Our Fox and Prince parasol arrived! It's absolutely gorgeous. (Me, in workout finery, not so much.)

Got a loooong overdue pedicure, and after some classic Dallas weather twists this week (40-degree temperature swings, per usual), was greeted with a balmy 80 degrees for champagne night with the girls last night. My toes were so excited to be free again on the patio. (My shoe collection is probably 80% open toe... I'm in trouble if we move north.) I neglected to take a photo of the fun night out, which is probably a sign we were having too much fun to bother, wouldn't you say?

An impulsive post-champagne rendezvous with the F-Word found the two of us at one of our favorite neighborhood haunts, Victor Tango, where I indulged in two of my favorite things: the Pepper Smash and some Ahi Tuna Nachos. YUM.

Late-night frivolity = being late for work this morning and realizing I forgot to fill up on gas. Oops.

The 'what if' cookout dress

We're not having a typical "rehearsal dinner." Instead, we're having a Welcome Cookout for everyone invited to the wedding. It takes so much to get to the Outer Banks that having a big party to congratulate everyone on getting there - and begin celebrating! - was a no-brainer. As the kickoff event to a weekend full of activities, it's also where everyone can meet everyone else and ensure that by the time the wedding rolls around, they are old friends and ready to party.

The cookout will be on the lawn overlooking the beach and will feature two of my favorite things: eastern NC bbq and shrimp. (And yes, plenty of veg-head options, never fear...) So the vibe is decidedly casual; the Weekend Festivities card that'll go in the invitations even mentions flip-flops in the event listing.

If I were one of those brides who wanted to cloak herself in white from now until May 24, I'd probably find an adorable informal white dress for said cookout. But I'm not one of those girls... as cute as that look is on someone else (and it is! I have my sister's white strapless sundress she wore to her rehearsal dinner hanging in my closet right now). But I'm too much of a color fiend to wear white on two whole days, so I'll undoubtedly find some sort of brightly colored sundress to pair with one of my twelve pairs of wedge sandals.

But if I were that girl? I think this is the dress I'd buy. How adorable, and just the right mood.

Our flowergirl dress (!)

Let's hear it for... No more dresses arriving in the mail that are not how they appeared. No more fruitless searching through children's stores. Most importantly, no more scary web-surfing through flowergirl/pageant dress websites that make me want to cover up my laptop with a blanket and wash the makeup off its face. I am done with all of it.

Announcing... The flower girl dress!

I adore it. The ribbon detail in person is so charming. It's made by Biscotti, but is one of last year's dresses, and I was lucky enough to find it new, still with tags, on eBay. I love eBay.

We're going to add some red and navy details by hand. And of course, only the cutest red shoes for my adorable niece.

It's a banner week for wedding party attire, folks.

All hail a good tailor

Major kudos are due to the tailor who turned a grandfather's seersucker suit (a fantastic suit with a very vintage feel, but perhaps a bit too vintage of a cut) into a suit fit for a modern groom.

We weren't sure it was going to be possible. But behold, as of last night, a suit that fits the F-Word perfectly, with flat front pants!

As much as we were intrigued by the idea of having a custom suit made, we love that he will get to wear his grandfather's suit on our wedding day. How many guys can say that? I think it's really special.

Paired with the same navy linen tie and red dotted pocket square as the groomsmen, it comes together a little something like this...

Wow... we are really making this thing happen!

The guys (sans bout)

The guys in our wedding aren't wearing boutoinierres boutonierres boutonnieres. Sure, it's traditional to wear them. Sure, wedding blogs are filled with examples of interesting bouts that provide a little more edge to the look. But: guys dislike them and flowers wilt. Floppy wilting flower by night's end = turnoff.

So instead, a dapper pocket square. More T's style, anyway.

So to our favorite groomsmen, who are wearing bouts, thanks but no:

And to President Kennedy, who is demonstrating the F-Word's #1 pet peeve by wearing both a pocket square and a bout, tsk tsk:

Our groomsmen will be sporting a cheerful ensemble of stone chino suit + blue checked shirt + navy linen tie + red dotted pocket square.

Two things:
  1. The tie has tons of texture that is apparent in person and not so much in our rushed dusk photograph. It's a great beach tie.
  2. We used unmentionables to stand in for pocket squares, so get over that when viewing the photo. And pretend that my hastily Photoshopped white polka dots are real ones. Basically, pretend this is a great pocket square and not wadded-up red underwear.

FingersCrossed/<100 Days edition

I have an accelerated heart rate right now due to some rapid fire wedding-related purchases, so bear with me. As of an hour ago...
  • There is another flower girl dress. Since the last one crashed and burned in all its inappropriately glittery glory, I have shied away from all fabrics that have even a hint of sheen and have stayed focused on my original all-cotton mandate. FINGERS CROSSED.

  • We have more fabric drama. I am beyond ready to get past the fabric decision. In fact, I spent last week happily focused on centerpieces and flowers, assuming the fabric was done. Nope - the design we loved (at right) had a printing error and wasn't made with a true white in the background for this batch, and we don't have time to wait for the next batch. So we're trying again with a 6-yard rush order of something else, and a slight change in plan. FINGERS CROSSED.
(I'm trying not to jinx myself by posting the new stuff online, so stay tuned.)

In other planning news, we are under 100 days now, eeeeeek. Just one more reason why the two bullet points above really, really need to be resolved. In other matters:

  • The F-Word is taking his grandfather's seersucker suit to a tailor today so that we can finally determine whether or not it will work. There are a few reasons that weren't initially obvious to us why the vintage suit might have to serve as the inspiration rather than his actual wedding suit. But never fear! First, there are lots of seersucker suits available online and in stores. Second, we had a delightful meeting with a custom suitmaker this weekend, and having a custom seersucker suit made is much more affordable than we thought. The custom route intrigues us because (A) Most off-the-rack seersuckers don't have a very modern fit - and our groomsmen suits definitely do. Girls, I'm sure we're all in agreement about flat front pants, yes? (B) They sew your name into the suit or, in this case, your wedding date. Just like someone's wedding dress label. Hmmm... (C) They'll line the suit in whatever you want, including fun patterns like polka dots. Just sayin'....

  • I'm having some angst about wedding dress alterations. Thankfully, I don't need very much done to the dress, but that's also why paying a set (outlandish) price for alterations gives me the hives. I'm searching for an alternative that is cheaper and doesn't involve leaving my dress with someone who makes me wonder if she'll sell it on eBay as soon as I'm back in my car. Also, I wonder if it's silly to worry about alteration costs this late in the game. But then I add up said costs in my head and get the hives again. Thoughts?

  • Our invitations are so close to being done we're talking Pantone colors. Whoopee!!!!
97 days to go. That's all I've got right now.

F-Word Friday: Black Tie or Bust?

Liz Lemon (yelling): "Why are you wearing a tuxedo?"

Jack Donaghy: "It’s after six, Lemon. What am I, a farmer?"

The biography that posted last Friday as an introduction to this weekly feature was, well, ridiculous. As are all third-person autobiographies really, despite Facebook’s insistence to the contrary. But the one I wrote was particularly absurd. The details are almost entirely fabricated. But the timeline, and the locations, are all factual. I was born in Philadelphia and raised in a quiet upper-middle class Connecticut suburb. I did go to boarding school, and after a year off I did enroll at and eventually graduate from Yale. All of which is largely irrelevant to a wedding blog, except for one reason: it’s my belief that I’ve spent an inordinate amount of time in, and am really quite fond of, the tuxedo.

Maybe this has nothing to do with my adolescence and education. And one certainly need not go to boarding school or college to spend several nights a year in formalwear. But with the exception of the black-tie charity events of my adulthood in Dallas, nearly all of my nights in a tuxedo came via school, and came often. There were formals, cotillions, and debutante balls in high school (which we all knew was just an excuse for us kids to play dress-up). In college, there were the formal cocktail and Christmas parties in NYC, and nearly all of my best friends from college had black-tie weddings. And I always have a great time. Everyone looks fantastic (aside from the occasional extra from a Growing Up Gotti prom episode). Honestly, I wish I had more occasions to wear one now. I owned my first tuxedo in ninth grade, and have one in my closet now, ready to slip on at a moment’s notice.

But we’re not having a black-tie wedding, and that’s a good thing. The cliché, as we all know, is that the bride plans everything because she’s had her heart set on xyz since she was 5. And that’s true for some weddings, I’m sure. But neither one of us is the kind of person to impose their aesthetic on the other….we’re not that couple. The wedding should be all about who WE are, together. It’s not hers or mine alone. I love the vibe we’re going for, and think we’re going to get it. I love the idea of wearing seersucker, and not as a gimmick but as something I’ve worn before and something that will feel very much like me. Besides, Maggie and I have gone black-tie before, and will again, if only because Maggie looked so utterly devastating in her dress the last time it happened. And, well, because after the wedding the tuxedo is going to be a little jealous....

Dress-up Ken

Last night we played one of my favorite games: Dress-Up Ken! This is when the f-word patiently tries on about ten different groomsmen and groom looks for me and we critique each one.

We're getting close, which is good for our planning needs and bank accounts. But it's bad for my love of the Ken show.

Maybe soon I can make the f-word model honeymoon looks? Cookout ensembles? Brunch attire? :-)

Two big decisions for the guys: this suit and this shirt. Ties (of course!) to be continued...

(T. M Lewin is our favorite shirtmaker, fyi... even more so than Thomas Pink, and a heck of a lot cheaper. Ladies, get your men in these shirts, trust me!)

Notes on flower girl dress shopping

1. I simply cannot justify spending $250 on a flower girl dress, no matter how adorable it is. Sorry.

2. When searching for flower girl dresses, you inevitably end up on pageant dress websites, and they are terrifying. Little girls painted up and dressed to look like trashy teens will always horrify me.

3. Now there is a market for "plus size" flower girl dresses? Please, America, step away from the fast food.

Flower girl dress FAIL

Boo. The flower girl dress arrived today, and is inexplicably silvery-sparkly. Which, as you can see, is not indicated in the photo. Grrrrr.....

Flower girl dress = Unstoppable cuteness

I'm crazy-excited about the flower girl dress we found for my niece Taylor.

First, an excuse to post a photo of the cutest, smartest little girl EVER, who will be just days shy of 2 years old on our wedding day:

The nugget herself

Next up: The dress! I wanted something patterned in red or blue - a surprisingly difficult task, I found. But look what my sister discovered for a steal:

Dying of the cuteness over here! The flower is removable, so we're going to find a red flower instead.

Let's review: Red striped shoes on the bridesmaids and blue polka dots on the flower girl? Someone is getting exactly the kind of blue and red patterned wedding she was hoping for. :-)

Oh no we didn't

Guess who bought twothree more ties last night?

Hopeless, we are.

Update: I was informed this afternoon that I was wrong; we actually bought three ties last night. But progress! After trying them on with a stone-colored suit tonight, we are immediately returning two of them. On-hand tie count soon to be 8. Total purchased now at 13.

Bridesmaid shoes!

I never planned on mandating matching bridesmaids' shoes, trust me. My thinking was, everyone should go out and get a fab pair of strappy red heels that they love and would wear again and again. But this is no regular group of bridesmaids: this is Team Maggie. And since they are so kick-ass - and my kinda girls on all things shoe-related - they are rising to the challenge of the blue and red patterned wedding and exceeding any and all expectations.

Enter: The red striped shoe. With a blue bow that just happens to match the bridesmaid dresses. And a playful cork heel that doesn't take itself at all seriously.

I know!

My sister found them for the crazy-clearance-additional-percent-off-markdown price of... $15. Seriously.

So after e-mailing Team Maggie for approval, everyone loved them, shoe sizes were sent, and my marvelously pregnant Maid of Honor made it happen.

Loving this teamwork.

To Team Maggie! And to shoes!

Tie ten on

We cannot stop buying ties. Seriously. Since planning this thing, the tally looks like this:
Purchased - 10 Ties
Returned - 2 Ties
Gifted - 1 Tie
On Hand Right Now - 7 Ties
Wedding Party - 5 Guys
Here's how this mess began:

Remember when we were going to have a coral and peach wedding? Ha ha ha. We found a brilliant tie for Trevor to wear - very English, just gorgeous. It would've looked great with a light stone/linen suit and a pink shirt. Then, we found four groomsmen ties. Done, right?

No... we switched colors. We love both of these ties, though, so Trevor kept his groom's tie, returned two groomsmen ties, kept one of those, too (and wore it with a khaki suit to my cousin's wedding - it would've been a great wedding look), then gave one to his dad for Christmas.

Moving on to blue and red (thank goodness!).

We knew right away that Trevor should wear blue seersucker, and our first thought was that he could wear the tie his dad got married in - navy with white dots. Only the more we looked at it, the more we were seeing the tie's age and decided to purchase a new tie very much like his dad's tie. Here's Trevor in the seersucker, with his dad's tie, and a cat toy feather in place of a flower. We eventually decided that more color would be better; navy and white polka dots weren't a bold enough look because they don't pop in the photos. The new tie is gorgeous and is imminently wearable, though - not a chance he's returning it. But I can definitely see incorporating polka dots elsewhere - the ribbon on the bouquets/boutonnieres, for example.

In search of red and blue ties, we found ourselves stuck in the cool weather tie season - not many whimsical warm weather ties at all. In a series of frustrating shopping attempts, we'd fall in love with one tie to discover that it was the only one left in the entire country. That happened twice.

Still, a red and cornflower blue tie was so great with his suit, we bought it anyway, thinking we'd figure out the rest later. But since we're still unsure about exactly what the guys will wear, we keep buying promising ties and hanging onto the receipts, not knowing exactly what we'll want yet afraid to pass up "the" tie. We've considered just having everyone in different great ties, but because Trevor won't be dressed like them to begin with, he's hoping for a little more consistency.

The latest contenders for either Trevor, the guys, or a combination of the two:

Left: We have two of these and could probably find two more if it's the guys' tie. It also looks great with the seersucker - so do we need three?

Middle: This could work depending on what the guys wear, and photographs really well. There were five at the store, but we only bought one. Trevor's keeping it as a "Christmas tie" no matter what.

Right: Looks really fun with seersucker, but there's not enough of these to go around, so if he went with this we'd need to find a complementary tie for the guys. His Virgo sensibility can't deal with the opposite-leaning stripes on the other two, so they would be out.

Lesson here? It's easier, more fun, and cheaper to buy ties than anything else, but unless you want to end up like us, hold off on buying ties until the other attire decisions are made. If I were more patient, I'd have just waited until the new spring ties were all here and then I'd have my pick. But no, way too easy.

We're currently leaning toward a navy chino suit for the groomsmen, by the way, but still aren't sure. A very light stone could work, too. Mixing and matching so far hasn't worked - our last attempt (seersucker vest with navy pants, going for a vintage feel) looked like a waiter's uniform. And groomsmen without jackets looks a little middle school dance to us, as much as we'd hoped the guys wouldn't have to buy full suits. We shall see.

Stay tuned to see just how many ties we end up with.

We found it.

SUCCESS! After a fun morning of try-ons (so that's what I look like in the wedding cake topper dress...), we had a serious contender, but one more dress across town that I had to have Lisa see me in. As soon as I walked out in it, she announced that our work was done.

Whew! Sweet relief!

This
is how great I feel in the dress. It really is the only one I've tried on that makes me grin.

(Wait, you didn't think I was going to post a full photo of me in the dress, did you?)

As bonus good news, the J. Crew bridesmaid dress we ordered fit Lisa perfectly and looks adorable! Here she is with Mr. Switters totally checking her out.

Lisa needs Heather, Morgan, and Avery beside her!

You know, when you have a day as full of happy dress-up experiences as this one was, you just might need to celebrate that night. Heartily.

Two sisters, on the floor (?!?!) of the Granada Theater after an Ani Difranco show.

Can't. Stop. Laughing.

Mom-shopping

Last weekend Trevor's mother tried on a few dresses, and his father's girlfriend is itching to do the same. My mom? Not so much. While Ali and Jeanne were anxious to "follow the Mother of the Bride's lead," which apparently is what tradition calls for, my mom is not interested in shopping for an outfit until approximately April.

So Mom, this one's for you. :-) And remember: think beachy-warmweather-fun!

Bride Typology A: The Romantic

I met the sweetest bride in the world this weekend, and she made me feel like the anti-girl.

On a mini-vacay with Trevor's fam in Connecticut, his sisters, mother, and I went to our appointment at The White Dress By the Shore a little too decaffienated for what awaited us. Turned out that our appointed sales associate was a former student of Trevor's mother. She's also the most adorable, blondest, roundest thing in the world, who squealed like crazy when she saw Trevor's mom. Liberal use of the phrases "meant to be," "the best day of work ever," and "I'm just so excited to part of your son's day" followed. In my bride typology lexicon, she is what we will henceforth refer to as The Romantic.

The Romantic is getting married in October. When we commented on her antique engagement ring, she got very serious, her eyes welled up with tears, her hand went over her heart, and she said:

"My fiancee sparkles so much more than this ring does."

Just call me Grinch, but there's no way I could ever say that with a straight face.

The Romantic lives for that kind of thing, though. This day is Her Dream. Love conquers all. Sweetness prevails. Cake and roses everywhere. And really, what better job for her than to outfit brides and bridesmaids every day?

True to her job description, The Romantic rallied us through a morning of bridesmaid dress try-ons peppered with such romantic earnestness that we all felt like grinches by comparison. Just how effective was she? We changed the bridesmaid dresses to something more romantic. The sweeter, twirlier look prevailed.

Of course it did.
